🦆 The Story Behind DuckPilot: How I Built a Desktop App to Tame the Developer Chaos
Building an app is always an adventure, but building one to solve your own daily frustrations is something truly special.
As a developer constantly juggling multiple projects, WSL environments, Docker containers, and AWS services, the context switching was getting out of hand. Jumping between scattered terminal windows, hunting down the right CLI commands, and managing SSH keys manually was exhausting. That's why I created and launched DuckPilot.
DuckPilot is a desktop application built to centralize and simplify the developer workflow. It brings all your essential tools—from WSL and Docker management to Git branch switching and AWS SSM Tunnels—into one clean, accessible interface.
Here is the story of how DuckPilot went from a frustrating day of terminal wrangling to a robust developer portal.
🧠 1. The Brainstorming & Design: Why DuckPilot?
The idea for DuckPilot came from a simple observation: developers spend too much time fighting their tools instead of writing code.
While researching existing developer dashboards, I found that many were either too bloated, entirely cloud-based, or required massive configuration to get started. I set out to design a tool that is:
- Local-first and blazing fast, running directly on the machine without unnecessary cloud dependencies.
- Clean and focused, prioritizing a highly accessible UX with no obscure settings or cluttered menus.
- Action-oriented, allowing developers to manage their infrastructure with one click rather than ten keystrokes.
I focused heavily on simplicity and visibility. The layout was drafted around a core philosophy: See State ➔ Take Action ➔ Get Back to Coding.
This meant turning tedious tasks—like generating and copying WSL SSH keys, checking Docker container statuses, or firing up an AWS SSM tunnel—into simple, visual dashboard interactions.
🛠️ 2. The Tech Stack: Flutter for the Desktop
Because I wanted DuckPilot to be fluid, responsive, and perform beautifully as a native desktop application, the architectural choices were critical:
- Framework: Flutter (Dart) – I chose Flutter because it allowed me to build a gorgeous, responsive, and cross-platform visual system. It proved that Flutter is not just for mobile; it can deliver a premium desktop experience. To be completely honest, I didn't 100% know how to use Flutter when I started. I relied heavily on "vibe coding"—learning on the fly, experimenting, and letting intuition (and a bit of AI help) guide me—to finish this app!
- State Management: I used Riverpod to predictably and robustly manage complex global states, such as live updates from Docker container lifecycles and active project profiles.
- System Integration: Under the hood, DuckPilot seamlessly executes shell commands, interacting natively with WSL, Git, and Windows utilities. I even built an in-app developer console to surface runtime logs without opening an external terminal.
- Packaging & Delivery: I utilized Inno Setup to create a standalone
DuckPilotSetup.exeand integrated a custom update service to handle seamless new version rollouts directly from GitHub.
🧪 3. The Testing: Real Workflows, Real Feedback
Building the tool was only half the battle. Testing it in the trenches of real, daily development work is where the magic happened.
Early dogfooding and feedback highlighted several key areas:
- Simplicity is Key: My early layouts for the WSL Tools and Git branch switcher were a bit clunky. I immediately redesigned the project dashboard to feature a clean grid with intuitive dropdowns and single-click execution.
- Familiar Tools Matter: Developers didn't want to learn a new paradigm; they wanted a GUI wrapper around what they already knew. This pushed me to refine features like opening the
hostsfile with a single button and adding Backstage-inspired plugin architectures. - Resilience: When my installer hit GitHub API rate limits, I had to rethink my update service to be more robust, ensuring developers could always access the latest build without getting a "429: Too Many Requests" error.
I am incredibly grateful for the iterative process that helped break the app, suggest features, and make DuckPilot rock-solid!

While it is heavily focused on optimizing WSL and Windows workflows right now, my long-term goal is to continue expanding its "developer portal" capabilities—adding more infrastructure observability, service catalog features, and deeper integrations.
Building DuckPilot has been an incredibly rewarding project. I hope it brings speed, organization, and a little less chaos to the developers who need it most. 🦆❤️
